Inside each tooth is the dental pulp that contains nerves and blood vessels. This living structure is normally protected by the dentin and enamel, but when an untreated cavity allows bacteria to penetrate deep inside the tooth, the dental pulp is infected. Swelling squeezes the nerve and causes pain. Eventually, the pulp dies and the tooth falls out. Sometimes, cysts may form and cause serious problems.
